Sept 23 - Nov 11, Wednesdays, 5:30 to 7:30 pm (8 sessions). In person at Literary Arts, Portland.
This craft-focused workshop is built around personalized feedback on work in progress. Each session, the group reads and discusses four writers’ submissions, and for every piece, the instructor prepares an individual craft lesson—the one element she believes will most help that piece take its next step forward.
This is workshopping in the traditional model, with three things added. Every writer receives detailed, line-level editing and concrete revision strategies. Feedback leads with strengths, naming what each piece is already doing well before offering where the greatest opportunity lies, because writers revise most effectively from their best work, and often don’t yet see what that is. Feedback is framed as craft questions—what is this scene asking for, where does the work want to build—so that writers leave with direction they can act on.

Being “in scene” is where storytelling comes alive on the page. It’s where readers feel, understand, and enter a story’s world—where we experience deeper emotional truths that keep us turning pages. Scene is the foundation of memorable storytelling, and it is a craft that crosses every genre.
This five-day intensive teaches writers the essential elements of compelling scene construction. Over five class meetings, students will learn to create authentic characters, ground readers in vivid and purposeful setting, weave exposition seamlessly into narrative, and build scenes that draw readers in and hold them page after page. In each session we move from craft principle to practice and feedback, so that each writer leaves understanding how scene works and having practiced, too.

I offer professional instruction that builds on skill and confidence. Our grounded approach combines proven storytelling techniques from classic literature with practical, contemporary application.
